Ancient Shan Tuyết Tea of Cao Bồ, Tuyên Quang: An Essence Affirming Its International Position
For tea lovers at Viet Hoa Tam Tra, the ancient Shan Tuyết tea of Cao Bồ is not only a premium beverage, but also a “pure treasure” distilled from the misty mountain cliffs, carrying the cultural soul of the Dao Đen ethnic community in the Northwestern region.
1. Tây Côn Lĩnh Raw Material Region: The “Kingdom” of Centuries-Old Tea Trees

Located in Thac Tang hamlet, Cao Bo commune, Tuyen Quang province (formerly Vi Xuyen district, Ha Giang province), the raw material region of Cao Bo Organic Tea Joint Stock Company enjoys invaluable natural advantages:
- Ideal altitude: From 1,200 to 2,400 meters above sea level, backed by the majestic Tây Côn Lĩnh mountain range.
- Distinct climate: Year-round cloud cover and large day-night temperature differences help tea plants accumulate perfect nutrients.
- Rare soil: Natural forest soil rich in minerals nourishes more than 1,200 hectares of ancient Shan Tuyết tea trees.
Here, tea “ancestors” aged from 100 to over 300 years, and in some cases up to 500 years old, stand with moss-covered, rough trunks reaching up to absorb the essence of heaven and earth. These harsh conditions create Shan Tuyết tea buds with fine white fuzz like velvet, offering an initial mild astringency followed by a deep, lingering sweetness that lasts in the throat.
2. The Cultural Mark of the Dao Đen and the “Cao Bồ Heritage Tea Region” Festival

Accounting for 90–95% of the population in Cao Bồ commune, the life of the Dao Đen people has long been closely tied to every ancient tea root. Tea trees are not only a livelihood that helps locals escape poverty and stabilize their lives, but also their lifeblood and the soul of the village.
Every year, at the end of the lunar March, local authorities and residents enthusiastically organize the “Cao Bồ Heritage Tea Region” festival. This is an occasion to:

- Promote potential: Connect local agricultural products, especially Shan Tuyết tea specialties, with major consumer markets.
- Tea roasting competition: Representatives from 11 villages compete in traditional tea roasting, creating a warm atmosphere of unity and human connection.
- Preserve cultural identity: Visitors can witness the unique “initiation ritual” of Dao men or admire the traditional craft of fine silver carving passed down through generations.
3. From a State-Owned Factory to an International Organic Tea Brand

Originally a state-owned tea factory established between 1997 and 1999, and after various development phases (renamed Hung Cuong Tea Company in 2016), the unit has now strongly transformed into Cao Bo Organic Tea Joint Stock Company under the leadership of Director Nguyen Van Bien and Deputy Director of Production Nguyen Van Toan.
International Organic Certification: Persisting with natural cultivation methods, completely free of chemicals and pesticides, the company’s products have achieved international organic certification, meeting export standards and conquering demanding markets such as Europe, the USA, China, Russia, and Turkey…
4. Discover the Cao Bồ Premium Tea Collection

Under the supervision and skilled hands of Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, each tea line at the factory follows meticulous processing procedures, preserving its original flavor:
4.1. Ancient Shan Tuyết Green Tea

Process: Cooling, ventilation → enzyme deactivation roasting → cooling with fans → rolling to form tea leaves → fluffing evenly → drying roast. The tea retains its rustic young rice aroma and a balanced sweet-astringent taste.
4.2. Ancient Shan Tuyết Black Tea

Process: Cooling and ventilation → withering for about 10 hours until the buds reach elasticity → rolling → natural fermentation for 2–4 hours → drying. The tea liquor is amber red with a naturally fruity sweetness.
4.3. Raw Pu-erh Tea (Yellow Tea) & Ripe Pu-erh

- Raw Pu-erh: Cooling → high-temperature roasting → cooling with fans → rolling → loosening and cooling for 2 hours → natural sun-drying.
- Ripe Pu-erh: Based on raw Pu-erh, the tea undergoes accelerated fermentation, creating a warm taste, thick sweet aftertaste, and a unique woody aroma.
4.4. Ancient Shan Tuyết White Tea

- Bud white tea: Cooling → light enzyme deactivation roasting → electric oven drying → sun drying.
- White peony tea (1 bud 1 leaf): Cooling → low-temperature natural withering → sun drying.
4.5. Unique Innovative Tea Products

- Tangerine Pu-erh Tea: After removing the pulp, wild tangerine peels are tightly stuffed with Pu-erh tea and dried in an electric oven for 12–13 hours. This tea combines pure citrus aroma with the deep warmth of Pu-erh.
- Bamboo Tube Tea: Pu-erh tea is stuffed into fresh forest bamboo tubes in small batches, heated over fire, sealed with banana leaves, and hung above the kitchen fire to allow smoke to continue naturally transforming the tea.
5. The Journey of Preserving the “Heritage Trees” Origin

Beyond business activities, the awareness of preserving valuable genetic resources is always prioritized. A typical example is the collaboration to install conservation markers for three ancient tea trees over 300 years old in the garden of Mr. Ban Van Ong (former commune chairman of Thac Tang hamlet).
Through a solemn forest spirit worship ritual, conservation based on the local community not only helps preserve ancestral treasures but also creates a tourist highlight, promoting sustainable eco-tourism in the Cao Bồ tea region.
